TLDR: Random thoughts
GMTC (Give me the context):
I was introduced to the concept of the buffalo by my younger brothers. A buffalo (or “your buffalo”) is a random thing that you say in addition to your typical “rose, bud, thorn” reflections. This Scroll is where my buffalos/random thoughts will live (in longer form)
Examples of buffalos:
- I want chipotle
- I learned that this little Dutch company called ASML controls the global supply chain of Microchips today. Why does nobody talk about that?
- People forget about Plants VS zombies. Great game.
- Let’s move to NYC
- China is making giant fish nets to catch their rockets after decoupling and use them again. Kinda funny

Harnessing nature in every form seems to be a throughline of human history. From the discovery of fire to the creation of artifical intelligence. We basically gave sand the ability to think. WTF! Today my buffalo is thankfully not about technology though - it is about my dogs. Im taking care of them this weekend. In my family, we have this hasty generalization of my dogs being “crazy” when “confined” by the grid of suburbs. They much prefer vast open places. This makes sense, and TBH, me too! But the thing that gets me is that this idea is rooted in the place, not their experience. In Palo Alto, where my parents live, the dogs are subject to strict leashing on most walks - the majority of their experience of nature is confined to the tethered human and a 7 foot long leather strap (sounds kind of kinky). This makes them crazy!!! They bark at people randomly and other dogs make them totally erupt. I know them as these little grubs that like to play and paw at me for butt scratches, but they appear as total demons to the Palo Alto community. This is strictly because of the harness and leash! So ive been experimenting by removing their leashes in public and just walking with them. its like it was supposed to be this way. instead of them JOLTING when seeing something that lights their amygdala and fighting to break free from my clutch, they just seem like pleased and patient. So far, unleashing this form of nature has been going well.

There is not much profoundness to be shared here, but I’ve been thinking about how “raw dogging” is actually just like living life without constant stimulation, and how raw dogging certain experiences actually can be extremely enjoyable. Raw dogging = extreme presence in the moment. Here is an example. I love going to the gym. I love making progress in the gym. I also love music. The two sometimes mix, but sometimes they are a mindless soup of stimulation that prevents boredom. The gym, for example, is a great place to be totally present. When deep in strength or skill training, I’ve found u have to be totally focused on the movements occuring to ensure progress. This is also reflected in current research (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10883160). Anyhow, I do think the two experiences can and should often mix, but they also deserve their own appreciation separately. Being present, “raw dogging” in less stimulating environments, also allows you to feel awake and ready to experience the surprises of life - that good, unplannable, randomness that New Yorkers accept as daily life (subway experiences, wacky encounters, etc.). Anyways, thats my Buffalo today.
